Garvestone and Thuxton

The memorial sits in the entrance of St. Margaret’s, Garvestone. It is made of grey stone carved into a large cross and is adorned with names of eight World War One veterans as well as the inscription:

“IN THANKFUL COMMEMORATION OF THE PEACE 1919 AND IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE OF THESE OUR BROTHERS OF THUXTON WITH GARVESTON WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR RIGHT AND HONOUR IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1919.”

Algernon H. P. Easlea

Algernon was born on 18 March 1886 and was killed on 19 January 1918. He now rests in the Chocques Military Cemetery in France.

Sidney E. Jowlings

Sydney was born 17 February 1894 and died of his wounds on 22 November 1917 aged 22. He now rests in Tincourt New British Cemetery.

Willie Read

Willie was born on 1894 and was killed in February 1917 aged 22. His body was never found but he is commemorated on the Doiran Memorial.

Jesse A. Ward

Jesse was born on 7 February 1899 and was killed on 4 October 1917. He now rests in the Zantvoorde British Cemetery in Belgium.

Percy Howard

Percy was born in 1898 and died as a prisoner of war on 13 July 1918. He now rests on Tourcoing (Pont-Neuville) Communal Cemetery in France.

Harry A. Newson

Harry was born on 11 December 1892 and was killed on 16 July 1918 aged 25. He now rests in the Bienvilliers Military Cemetery in France.

George was born on 3rd September 1874. He is buried Beuvry Communal Cemetery Extension in France.
