Cranworth with Letton and Southburgh
Cranworth, Letton and Southburgh are three, small, neighbouring villages in Norfolk. The War Memorial for Letton and Cranworth is centred in the churchyard at Cranworth St. Mary. A winged angel stands above the names of veterans who fought in the First World War.
In St. Andrew’s church in Southburgh, the fallen are listed on a white and grey plaque set on the left-hand wall.
Jonathan Berry
John was born in 1891. He worked as a labourer in Southborough before enlisting. He was killed in France and laid to rest in St. Andrew’s Churchyard in Southborough.
Ernest W. Graves
Ernest was born in 1879 in Southborough. He married Emily Moore in 1901 and they had three children. He enlisted in Gravesend in Kent before being killed in action in France in 1918.
Frederick J. Green
Frederick was born in 1898 in Letton. He is the younger brother of Lionel. He enlisted in Attleborough and served in France before being killed aged 19 in 1918.
Bartlett Hart
Bartlett was born in 1894 and enlisted in Norwich. After arriving in Belgium he was reported missing in action, presumed dead, in 1917. He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
William F. Lyon
William was born in 1894 and lived in Cranworth. He was a driver in the Royal Army Service Corps before being killed in action in 1919 aged 25. He is buried at Mauberge Cemetery in France.
Robert Tuttle
Robert was born in 1892 to James and Sarah. In 1915, he enlisted in the Norfolk Battalion. He was killed in action in 1916 aged 24 and was buried at the Delville Wood Cemetery.
Victor T. Edwards
Victor was born in 1891 and enlisted in Norwich in 1915. He arrived in France in December 1915 but was later reported missing in action in July 1916. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
Lionel W. Green
Lionel was born in 1896 and worked as a labourer. He enlisted in Dereham and served in the Middle East. He was killed in action just 11 days shy of his 21st birthday and is buried in Gaza.
John Hagan
John was born in 1883. After enlisting, he was sent to Mesopotamia but was killed in an offensive against Ottoman forces at Sannaiyat. He is commemorated on the Basra Memorial in Iraq.
Sidney Hipkin
Sidney was born in 1888 and was one of seven children. He enlisted in the Norfolk Regiment but was killed in action a month before the end of the war in 1918. He is buried at Montbrehain British Cemetery.
Frederick S. Sidell
Frederick was born in 1899 and was one of 7 children. He enlisted as a Private in Norwich but was killed in action in France in 1918. He is buried at the Ploegsteert Memorial.
Frederick C. Ward
Frederick was born in 1888 and later married Catherine Whitworth in 1915. He fought in France but was tragically killed in September 1918 aged 31. He is buried at the Vis-en-Artois British Cemetery.
