Sydney Ernest Jowlings was born on 17 February 1894 at Potash Farm, Hethel. He was the son of Ernest Jowlings, farmer, and his wife Marion, a native of Thuxton (which appears to be the connection with Garvestone and Thuxton).

He was educated at the King Edward VI Middle School in Norwich, after which he was recorded in the 1911 Census as living at a boarding house at 29 Sigismund Road, Norwich, working as a butcher’s apprentice.

He enlisted on 12 January 1916. Though his career was relatively long, he succumbed to injuries sustained in action at the 5th Casualty Clearing Station in France on 22 November 1917. He is buried at Tincourt New British Cemetery.
