He was born as the second son of Walter and Louisa Fox, of Low Street, Hardingham.

He is recorded as being admitted to Hardingham School on 25th May 1903, leaving on 7th November 1912 to go into Domestic Service. He appears to have been a successful pupil; according to the School Log Book he received a prize for being top boy in Standard V in 1909, and shared the prize for top boy in Standard VI the following year.

He was called up in December 1916, and fell in France on 3 Sept 1918, aged just 20.

He is buried at Sunken Road Cemetery, Boisleux-St Marc. The inscription on his tombstone reads simply:

DEARLY LOVED BY ALL

The wooden cross which initially marked his grave, as supplied by the GRU (Graves Registration Unit), has been returned to the Church and is displayed there. Curiously, although his service number is correctly stated, it gives his name as “A. M. Fox”.
