John Greenwood was the son of Matthew, a farm labourer, and Maria Greenwood and was born in 1888. He was baptised at Reymerston on 1 July 1888. They lived in North Green.
He had a younger brother Charles and his mother died before he enlisted. John was also a farm labourer before he enlisted at Dereham and became a Private in the Norfolk Regiment 3327 1st 5th Battalion.
He embarked for Gallipoli on 6 August 1915 and was reported missing, presumed killed, on 28 August 1915 according to his military records. However, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission report his death as 12 August 1915.
His body was never recovered and he is one of 20,958 Allied servicemen commemorated on the Helles Memorial (Panels 43-45). His effects amounting to £2. 10s 11d were paid out to his father, Matthew.
