Herbert was born in East Tuddenham in 1892, the second son of John and Harriet Brown and the younger brother of Henry. His father was a farm labourer. His parents were living at the Lyngs in Reymerston at the time the war memorial was erected.

Herbert enlisted as a Private in the 9th Battalion Norfolk Regiment and was promoted to Lance Corporal, died on 1st May 1917 during the battle of Arras aged 25. He died in the trenches at Loos. The war diary says:

The last day in the trenches at Loos was very costly. Two deep dugouts
occupied by C Company were blown in. 1 officer and 16 men wounded and 20 killed and buried. Attempts to reopen the dugouts proved fruitless.

There is no grave for Herbert as his body was not found, but he is remembered on Panel 30 and 31 on the Loos Memorial in Pas de Calais in France. Herbert’s brother Henry also served in the Great War, but returned home safely.
