George was born 1888 in Barnham Broom to Horace and Mary Ann Allen (nee Pegnall). The 1891 Census records the family as living at Brandon Road, Barnham Broom; eight doors down the road from Mary Ann’s parents: William Pegnall, an agricultural labourer, and his wife, Mary.

In 1901, George was 12 and worked as a farm labourer whilst living at the family home. His father, Horace, also worked as a farm labourer whilst Mary Ann was a dressmaker. Also living in the house were George’s siblings: Edith (aged 16), Horace (aged 14), Isabel (aged 10) and Dorothy (aged 8).

10 years later, it appears that all children have moved away as Horace and Mary Ann were living on their own. George was 24 and worked as a bricklayer whilst lodging in Horsford.

George was killed on 25 October 1916 at the Battle of the Somme. He is buried at Regina Trench Cemetery in France. The inscription on his gravestone reads simply:

AT REST

Following his death his effects amounting to £3 1s 10d, together with a War Gratuity of £3, were paid out to his father, indicating that George never married.
