Frederick was born in Wramplingham in 1890 and was the eldest son of Walter and Honor Mitchell of Arthurs Cottages, Wramplingham. He had two older sisters, Agnes and Emma, two younger brothers Charles and Edward and three younger sisters, Lily, Elsie and Rose.

Frederick enlisted in the 8th Battalion, the Norfolk Regiment, in Norwich. The 8th Battalion was formed at Norwich in September 1914 and came under orders of the 53rd Brigade in the 18th (Eastern) Division, and landed in France in July 1915. The 18th (Eastern) Division was involved in the Battle of Albert in which it captured its objectives near Mont Auban on 1 July 1916. Frederick was killed in action on the first day of this battle, aged 26.

Frederick has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial in the Somme and on the Wramplingham War Memorial.
