Arthur Sidney Adcock was born in Norwich in September 1889, the son of Arthur and Charlotte Adcock. It was a large family; the 1911 Census, which found the family living at Plough Lane, Hardingham, recorded that Arthur and Charlotte had had eleven children, of whom five had died. In that Census, Arthur Sidney, the oldest of the surviving children, is referred to as “Sidney” – reasonable enough in order to distinguish him from his father, also called Arthur.
When he attends the National School in Norwich his name is given as “Sydney”.
His younger brother Bertie William and his brother-in-law Thomas Allen (who married Elsie May Adcock) were also killed in the Great War.
According to the Hardingham War Memorial Register, Arthur Sidney Adcock enlisted in the 3rd Battalion of the Norfolk Regiment in December 1914. He was sent to Salonika on 30 Sept 1915 and invalided home in December 1915. He rejoined his regiment subsequently. He was reported missing, believed killed, on 11 October 1916 at the Battle of the Somme. His body was never found and he is commemorated at Thiepval Memorial.
